Podcast Prep - 18if Episode 2

Podcast number 2 will be uploaded soon! We watched 18if Season 1 Episode 2! 18if is a 2017 anime series that can be viewed on many places but I’ve chosen Funimation’s App. It follows a man named Haruto as he travels the Dream world with his new acquaintances, Kanzaki and Lily. Kanzaki is a professor but chooses to use a anthro cat with a cane. Lily is a angelic vision only visible in rare circumstances but she speaks to Haruto quite often, calling him brother instead of his name.

During this episode we’re introduced to a new witch, a much darker and less enthusiastic witch. If you enjoy a small bit of gore and hate, this episode might be for you. The title of 18if’s second episode is “Time Stopped at Age 12.”

Be sure to follow From A to .hack’s Youtube, https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCy6AVYjj351Ftw8aSLsvDwA, or SoundCloud, https://soundcloud.com/user-97928095-9950487, to listen to the podcast and Follow the Blog or Twitter/Facebook @froma2dothack!

Week 6 of Anime Viewing - 1st Week of Podcast!

For this week, I’ll be watching 18if with a guest for the very first From A to .Hack podcast! It is a 2017 anime, directed by Koji Morimoto, it follows the life or should I say dreams of Haruto Tsukishiro. The anime series is 13 episodes long and around 25 minutes each. Main characters are Haruto, our hero, Lily, our mysterious dream world helper, and Kanzaki, our intelligent avatar cat friend. They are all in this dream world and while that may seem perfectly fine, they have to deal with dangerous witches to survive the dream world and wake back up.

That’s not all! I’ll also be watching Akira, a 1989 animated film directed by Katsuhiro Otomo. It’s a post-apocalyptic film that I’ve had several people recommend but never took the time to watch it. Thankfully I started From A to .Hack so now I have an excuse to sit around watching anime I never thought I’d get around to turning on. The main character is the leader of a biker gang named Shotaro Kaneda after an attack destroys the Tokyo they knew, the city is rebuilt but now the city is suffering from a great deal of violence.

009 Re:Cyborg

009 Re:Cyborg

Spoilers Ahead

Seriously, don’t keep reading if you don’t want to have the movie spoiled!

Just so we’re clear, you are about to read my thoughts that contain a great deal of spoilers concerning “009 Re:Cyborg” which is a 2012 Japanese Animation (Anime) Movie, if this is correct, thanks for being here and read on! TL;DR is near the bottom.

Basically I went in blind with only the little details from my husband concerning the television series to go on. I began the movie, which starts with a speech. And it’s another computerized art style anime…yay. Things are a bit stiff but I can get past it. Unfortunately, you can really see the Flip Book animation going on here, I mean I get they are cyborgs, ya know robots, but that doesn’t mean the humans should have flip book animations too.
I can get behind this music though, like woohoo, I feel like I’m about to watch a suspenseful and most likely horror infused film.

HOLY CRAP, I thought that was a giant spider in the waters reflection! Is it supposed to look like that? Probably.

So “His Voice” is first presented as someone entering people’s minds and causing them to commit suicide bombings. Interesting, I like the concept of this type of villain, makes them a bit harder to capture.

009, aka Joe, seems to being having memory trouble, which brings me to the question, is his cyborg self just living constantly through the same age, is his girlfriend a cyborg too? Am I going to learn more as I watch? We’ll see.

Yes, I did learn more, Joe’s girlfriend is actually 003 but the professor put an imaginary girlfriend in his head to help him cope or to reduce 003s worries. I also learned that this is 27 years in the future, my goodness I feel sorry for Joe and having to repeat high school for so freaking long. Does he go to different schools or the same one, are the teachers in on it? Like how does all that work? Is the schooling he gets just an illusion too?

Also watched the beginning again and realized his gf wasn’t seen at the entrance and she even looks at the window and notices she doesn’t have a reflection… how did I miss that the first time around? But how does she have friends for him to hang out with? Is the entire school an illusion?

003 looks like she has a huge wedgie in all the skirts she wears, why?

Ok, so they were a team, got it, they’re being summoned to save the country it appears and they needed to wake 009 up, is the woman and 009 a thing? I think they were attempting to go for sexy booty but all I saw was wedgie.

Is that a very large skeleton? I had to pause to look at the surroundings to find out if it just looked large or if it really was large? Ok now I’m even more confused on what “His Voice” is if it apparently does something weird like with the large skeleton. After watching a bit longer, that was a angel skeleton, not some giant skeleton and it basically was associated with the voice.

Ok going into this, I thought the nine cyborg’s were created for bad but would choose not to follow that path… yeah the Funimation description got me on that one. Who is a cyborg and who isn’t a cyborg? I’m getting confused on this one, how can you tell? Is everyone a cyborg? The way they mention cyborg’s it doesn’t seem like they’re all cyborg’s but heck if everybody I’ve met so far didn’t end up being a cyborg.

Well, well, well, I wasn’t expecting hentai! There was no hentai, just a little ‘cuddling’. But umm, 009 looked in the mirror like he didn’t recognize himself, she said she lived while he waited, did he change faces or something while she grew up he continued being a teen? Got a little further in the film, completely understand this meaning because she was still woke and was supposed to be watching over her teenage lover while he was dormant and waited to be woken up if there was ever a need for him again, all with his illusion girlfriend. The Professor would reset his mind to believe he was the age he was transformed and so he wouldn’t have to suffer the memories of the 00 team.

Freaking 001 is a baby, I just need to know why they thought transforming a baby for evil was a great idea. Is it because he would be the easiest to manipulate? Why is he still using a pacifier? I’m assuming he’s been transformed for just as long as Joe, he speaks as an adult, though telepathically, but still.

What is with the little angel girl? Is she “His Voice” presented in a more alluring way? Oh no, he came all this way to be lured by this apparition and die! That presentation of the angel skeleton was pretty cool to see. I’d like one of those to place outside during Halloween.

So is the Re in the title means he’s woken up and is reminded that he is a cyborg or is it Re because they all have to save the world again?

“His Voice” is making people kill themselves to ‘start over and help humanity’ with suicide bombings, great.

I’m so pleased we have the rockin’ music again.

Good job guys, fighting with each other killed thousands today, are ya proud of yourselves?

Ok, so how are these angel skeletons getting into places? I get how it can get into people’s minds but how are these large things getting into buildings, just appearing out of nowhere? Or did someone prop them up? If you said Devine Intervention then you may be correct!

The bombings started January 16th, 2013, after a dig team found a large angel skeleton. The head of the dig team assumed that maybe his team heard a message from God himself when they spoke of hearing voices in their heads. We’re lead to believe it’s a curse from digging up the angel, should’ve used some tech like what they have in Jurassic Park to see what was under the ground then thought twice about digging that stuff up. But back to what we later learn, it was the voice of God, manipulating people through a hive mind system to get them to do bad so the world will do good by coming together to fix their issues.

Why do some cyborgs have completely white eyes?

Dude’s hand is a gun! I don’t know why I find that so awesome compared to all the other freaking skills in this movie by these cyborgs but HIS FREAKIN’ HAND IS A MACHINE GUN! HIS KNEE LAUNCHES AMMO! I’ve never been so turned on in my life! Ok, maybe that’s not true, but OMG!

Oh no, Jet wasn’t in control of himself, so “His Voice” doesn’t just convince someone, it takes over their mind and body. I love that we saw what he saw first then he came across what really happened when he awoke from his injuries and probably from the angel’s possession.

Alright! We’re in the outfits we see all over the film cover. And finally, 003 is in something that looks AH-mazing on her!

Ok, I’m crying a little, I really hope he dies though, because these tears would be so pointless if he lives.

JET’S STILL ALIVE! Wait, doesn’t that mean, Joe will freaking LIVE?! NO!

Ummm, Joe? 009? Are you going to give us a speech or are you going to save the people?

Soooo, 001 IS still just like a baby, he’s adorbs when sleeping.

And yep, he’s alive, Joe lived somehow…

I’m so confused, they all end up in some Venice and alive? And we’re told it’s because Joe spoke the loudest to the voice, and the angel just freaking pops up to those that “did what was right.” Huh?

So the angel also believed to be the voice, showed up to people who did the wrong thing? But those same people that it seemed to show up around appeared to be BAD people, like in the board room where Jhet discovered they were hearing the voice… And This good angel voice that convinced others to suicide bomb, to attack a building full of people without realizing what they were doing because the voice took control, this voice was good? And somehow because 009 yelled the loudest to God, he put the world the way it should be and brought back the dead??? What!?

ALSO, the description of the film on the Funimation App reads, “Long ago, nine humans were captured and transformed into cyborgs for the purposes of evil. Instead, they became champions of justice.” This description does not describe this film, it describes the series, this film is after these events, it’s after they became champions of justice, this film is about them reemerging to fight once again and a voice that is causing destruction around the flippin’ flappin’ world. They were already Champions of Justice, how does this describe this film?

Ok, yes, while I am frustrated with that portion, you can find more information under the video on the funimation app and on Google that describes the film more accurately, I did not read this before going in.

TL;DR
Nine cyborgs once transformed from humans to became objects of evil, later became heroes in a team known as 00. After a victory, they chose to either go off on their own or stay together, the main cyborg, 009 aka Joe, was dormant and didn’t know who he really was but after bombings and a voice in people’s head appeared, the rest of the team woke him up and he eventually saves the day after so many people are killed by yelling the loudest to God.

A Prezi Presentation for Fun!

Woah! I made a Prezi Presentation, highlighting why you shouldn’t be discouraged by one form between Anime & Manga when quite often the anime & manga could have many differences making one version better than the other of the same title. https://Prezi.com/view/wQlu9O7zpFEwuwKiUEiV/

Week 5 of Anime Viewing

For this week, I’ll be watching 009 Re:Cyborg, which was meant to be my first podcast but after much thought and I have really been enjoying writing on my blog! I plan to keep animated stand alone films and movies of series for the blog. For the podcast, I’ll be watching anime series, five season episodes per podcast episode to keep from being worn out on anime when I have Friends to watch before Netflix loses access to them.

009 Re:Cyborg is a film about a group of humans transformed into cyborgs by a corporation who planned to use them to do harm but they chose to follow a different path. 009 Re:Cyborg was directed by Kenji Kamiyama and is based on an manga named Cyborg 009 by Shotaro Ishinomori. The film was released in 2012 and the events are set in 2013, we’ll see how this goes since it’s now 2019.

Mary and the Witch’s Flower

Mary and the Witch’s Flower
Spoilers Ahead

Seriously, Don’t keep reading if you don’t want to have the movie spoiled!

Just so we’re clear, you are about to read my thoughts that contains a great deal of spoilers concerning “Mary and the Witch’s Flower” which is a 2017 Japanese Animation (Anime) Movie, if this is correct, thanks for being here and read on!

“Mary and the Witch’s Flower” was made by Studio Ponoc and is based on children’s book, “The Little Broomstick,” by British Novelist, Mary Stewart. After learning this I understood the choice in having Mary’s English Dub speak with a British accent, if that choice was pointed out in the film, I must have missed it. No problem with that, just threw me off a bit as Mary reminds me of an older Ponyo.

Right off the bat you can see the Studio Ghibli inspiration with the art style and the flying blob fish. But who is this witch that looks like our main character?

In the beginning, were introduced to a red headed witch who appears to be stealing the “Witches Flower.” She’s being chased, so she calls forth her broom, who Mary will later name Little Broomstick, and after she seems to get away, she appears to pass out and her hair and clothes drastically change colors as I assume she falls to her death. The witches flower seeds fall from the bag she was carrying them in and causes the plants around to grow rapidly.

We meet Mary, who seems to be a slacker, clumsy, but wishes she wasn’t so. She currently lives with her Great Aunt Charlotte and I assume her caregiver/housekeeper, Mrs. Banks, while her parent’s are away for work. I’m not sure what age she’s supposed to be but based on my own kids and how they act, I’d say she’s between 10-12, she’s capable of doing things but she also seems very childish and eager to do more adult things like yard work but not very capable of having the patience to actually achieve the correct goals. My luck she’s actually like 13 or 14… Looked it up, based on the Fandom - Ghibli Wiki she is 13, I was close. It’s so Ghibli, it’s on the Ghibli Wiki.

Oh is this a love interest? Peter was it? Hmmm, he’s teasing her, yep, definite love interest there.

Fly by night is the name of the flower, only bloom once every 7 years.

When Red Head Witch in the beginning lost the witches flower did it cause all the plants around it to die because it seems like it grew a great deal of new life, not death, but the scene where Mary finds it shows the life around it is gone. I bet that was to show us a great deal of time had past but why would so much of it die off, that doesn’t make much since to me.

Obviously the cats didn’t want you touching the flower, why would you take the flower? She even makes a remark towards them, that she’s just taking one. Great, now there’s a horrible mist and one of the cats is missing, thanks Mary. And of course, Auntie warns her, Peter warns her, but does she listen, nope, goes into the misty forest.

Let me back up a bit, I almost thought it was her hands we saw looking at the flower, I was thinking of how old her hands looked, it ended up being Zebedee. He gives us, and Mary, the information we need about the flower and a little bit of significance to it in the beginning of the movie. The flower is called Fly-By-Night, it blooms once every seven years and is said to be desired by witches thus giving it the nickname, the witch’s flower. Now I’m wondering if this occurred after Red Head Witch showed the flower to Madam or was it desired before that instance.

Tib lost his girlfriend, poor Tib…

What’s up with this broom? Stretching it’s splinters before flying like it knows how to do? There is no way Tib is still on that broom! It’s not like he was holding on to the wood, he was “holding” onto bristles. Tib’s the new angry cat. Tib’s now a familiar and has to be leashed, poor Tib.

She wanted something to do, well, welcome to an unfamiliar places, bizarre humanoids, and schoolwork. So was Mr. Flanagan, aka broom guy, transformed? He reacted like he was and he freaked out when the doors to the school opened, was he even supposed to be there, did he once upon a time claim to be a student or employee and get found out and transformed so now he’s forced to watch over brooms?

You’re hurting Tib, calm down Mary! Poor Tib…

How did they know a new student was coming when she’s not a new student, who was supposed to be the new student? Also just realized broom guy didn’t read all the rules to her, just the first one which makes me wonder again did he trespass and end up being transformed.

Oh man, I kinda wanted to see one of those runners fall into the flames, I don’t know why, but I was a bit satisfied with the chick nearly falling from the rock climbing area.

It’s like the perfect abduction plan, compliment the heck out of a child that always feels inadequate, be sure to include her frizzy red hair as one of the best things in the world to have and bam!, Mary now believes she is very desired and now trusts you!

Poor Tibb…

Don’t get cocky, Mary, you literally don’t know jack diddly squat but the name of the flower that gave you these powers.

Oh no, I hear PETA planning a cartoon against this film after that scene with the experiments but of course, they’d ignore the end where ALL the animals are saved. I’m assuming that boy in the experiments is dead.

Remember what I was saying earlier about abducting Mary, well because she seemed to have trusted the Madam, she told her about the flower instead of just getting through her time there and going home forever.

That was a delayed reaction to a painful bottom, does magic help relieve pain? Can I get some of that flower power?

Yep, it’s all your fault, if you didn’t get all comfy with telling Madam the truth, then give her that note regarding someone you didn’t realize was important to you, then you wouldn’t be dealing with this and maybe could’ve avoided going back. But the story had to get her back for the revelation that Gib was taken with all the other innocent animals and transformed. Yes, I also understand she goes back to save him because she’s selfless.

Oh My God, I just realized who Great Aunt Charlotte is, she’s the girl that stole the flower and lost her red hair when she went falling to the Earth below. But was she a witch? Or did she also get power from the Witch’s Flower and for some reason it gave her red hair to make it easy to access areas? Idk, is the flower adaptive and learned that red hair is a good thing?

Peter looks like Link from Legend of Zelda in that cloak.

The Animals are FREE! How did the animals know that dropping into the water would put them in bubbles to escape? Have they escaped before?

I was going to say just jump but then comes Mr. Flanagan to the rescue and not even realizing something bigger is happening. Should’ve just jumped down on the back of one of the larger animals. I wonder if broom guy was going to be in trouble after all was said and done, after all, he did help them during the chase AND Madam and Doc D saw him.

The little cottage by the sea seems to have taken care of itself, even fresh food, how long was she gone though, how old is Auntie now and how old was she back then. She seemed like she was older than Mary at the time she was attending the college.

Man, being evil certainly changes someone’s body.

YES, Auntie was the young witch! She’s still a witch. But why did she fall and lose her hair color? Was it to throw off the Madam so they couldn’t sense her?

Ya know, if Mary hadn’t picked the flower, they wouldn’t be going through this right now, but those animals would be still transformed so I guess it’s a good thing she didn’t listen to the cats warnings.

Now you ride on the backs of the animals. Animals to the rescue!

That monkey is like the best, a little comic relief is nice, I started to get a little riled up there.

I guess Mr. Flanagan knew what was going on with the animals and he’s just a humanoid animal and wasn’t transformed, I wouldn’t want to go through the gates either.

Now Madam cares, now she wants to fix the mistake.

Mr. Flanagan is either delusional or just ignores everything that’s going on.

I absolutely love Mary’s hair in a single ponytail, it’s my preferred hairstyle as well.

So are they dating now or just friends? I wonder how she’ll feel when her parents come back, do they live far away or did she move in with her Great Aunt so she wouldn’t have to change schools. I read in a wiki after watching that she and her parents were moving in, that’ll be nice. She seemed to not know anyone around so I’m assuming she used to live in a different town.

Will Auntie start using magic again, now that she doesn’t have to worry about being tracked down? That little cottage was super cute and the house missed her so much, I think she should take visit.

Week 4 of Anime Viewing

Welcome to the From A to .Hack Blog, it’s week 4! I hope y’all enjoyed last weeks blog, “In this Corner of the World” was great, I watched it twice after writing that post!

This week I’ll be watching “Mary and the Witch’s Flower”, a Ghibli-esque film that was released in Japan in 2017 and USA release was 2018.

“Mary and the Witch’s Flower” is an animated fantasy film! It was directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, who worked on several Studio Ghibli films, which is most likely why it was given such a Ghibli feel. We follow Mary Smith on an adventure when she finds a mysterious flower that makes her a witch for just one night. Mary finds herself in the sky learning about witches and having a day of mis-identity with her red hair and new skills.

There are many places to watch “Mary and the Witch’s Flower,” I’ll be watching on Netflix.

In this Corner of the World

In this Corner of the World

Spoilers Ahead

Seriously, don’t keep reading if you don’t want to have the movie spoiled!

Just so we’re clear, you are about to read my thoughts that contain a great deal of spoilers concerning “In this Corner of the World” which is a 2016 Japanese Animation (Anime) Movie, if this is correct, thanks for being here and read on! TL;DR is near the bottom.

I started this anime in English Dub, quickly had to change to Japanese. The subtitles were a little quick for my ill brain to keep up with so I soldiered through it until Suzu became older I then switched it back and could stand the dubbed. The art style looks similar to older anime, I was surprised to see a more water colored world compared to the vibrant and smooth anime I’m used to viewing. But really, the voices of young Suzu, Sumi, and Tetsu Mizuhara, all sound like they’re 30 year olds talking into a bucket full of water, either that or my ear infection is fixated on them but allows adult voices to sound clear.

“In this Corner of the World” takes place in Hiroshima and Kure and is mainly set in the 1940s as we follow the life of a girl named Suzu, a young daydreamer, we start off seeing her life as a child with the work she does with her family and school, and when she meets a boy as they are being carried away in a basket. She also meets a ‘ghost’ while napping at her grandparents, the person was not actually a ghost but instead Rin, who she later meets again in the Red Light District, Suzu seems to have a poor memory so she doesn’t remember her instantly nor does she ever seem to remember when she first met her husband until the end, the boy she road with in the basket, Shusaku.

When she’s 18, Shusaku Hojo (22) asks for her to marry him and move to Kure, with no idea who he is, she decides to marry him anyway, even though she was told she can say no, often it’s mentioned she was forced into the marriage though. After moving to Kure to live with him and his family, she truly grows up and learns to be a wife and major part of the family unit during a violent time in history. During the food shortage she found ways to keep the family fed using herbs and attempts to increase the size of rice. In the beginning, she seems to fall into a depressed state, a bit homesick after going there and becoming a housewife with little time to draw and be herself. At one point her old friend, Mizuhara comes to see Suzu, he’s also a man who’s in love with her and she also wanted to be with him. Shusaku noticed this and in a way he gave Suzu permission to do the nasty with Mizuhara, I mean it’s not said out loud but he sends her to be with Mizuhara, alone, Shusaku even locks the door so Suzu can’t come back in, and Mizuhara TAKES THE OPPORTUNITY! He doesn’t get to get far though, Suzu realizes she loves Shusaku, I wonder if Shusaku knows she didn’t take the bait.

I absolutely LOVE the transitions between life and Suzu’s view of the world through art. Her easily distracted mind was so relatable, where she should be doing something else but it travels to this other world and she sees scenery with a different vision and must capture it. Even when all hell was breaking loose, her mind traveled to this other world, this world of pencil lines, ink strokes, and bursts of colors.

As stated in my “Week 3 of Anime Viewing” blog post, I’m not a public political person, so my thoughts on the war and the ideals from each participant’s side will be kept to myself. But I will say, it was interesting to watch an animated film in the viewpoint of the civilian Japanese people during World War II. War causes many struggles to those who are just trying to live day to day. When Suzu and Harumi found themselves outside during an air raid and Suzu became stuck in the moment, even though she knew she shouldn’t be but she wanted to paint the scene, I could feel that. Her art was no longer just a passion, it wasn’t just a hobby, it was an escape. It was heartbreaking to see Harumi’s death, you don’t view it in the explicit details but Suzu’s memories, in all it’s artistry portray’s the pain and sorrow quite well. Suzu ends up losing her dominate hand from the blast that killed Harumi, moving her into another state of depression.

I wish we could have seen more scenes with Suzu and Shusaku, like them getting to know each other a bit more. The scenes I did see were either uncomfortable (between them) or sweet, or Suzu was dealing with her emotions, which are understandable emotions but at times seem rather childish. That little kissing scene when they forget all else around, including her in-laws, at the shelter door, was so freaking cute! I love near the end when Suzu says the title to Shusaku on the bridge where they first met.

A couple last minute questions… I may be a little on the oblivious side here, but what did Suzu’s grandma mean when she was talking about the umbrella because she said he’d ask to open it? I mean, I suppose because he didn’t do what should have been done, it plays into his reserved character a bit more, like he’s wants to do ‘stuff’ but kinda not ready to do stuff, I don’t know, I could be reading into a bit much. And what’s the name of their adoptive daughter?

TL;DR
A young woman with her head in the clouds named, Suzu, marries a man 4 years older than her that she met when she was much younger in the city, his name is Shusaku Hojo. She moves from Hiroshima to Kure to live with his family and become a housewife. She is an exceptional artist, but late in the movie she loses her dominate hand after an explosion which also killed her niece. The film’s art style and animation is similar to older anime, it gave the movie a beautiful appeal when you include Suzu’s mind changing from real life to her artist vision of ink and pencil strokes. “In this Corner of the World,” we are given a glimpse into the struggles of those trying to survive and live day to day during an increasingly dangerous war, World War II to be exact. In the end, most of Suzu’s family dies due to the bombing and she and Shusaku appear to adopt a child who lost her mother. Lots of sadness, art, and growing relationships.

Week 3 of Anime Viewing

This week I’m going to be watching, “In this Corner of the World.”

At first I wasn’t sure if I wanted to review this film as I’m not the biggest fan of discussing politics, I prefer to just make my decisions on those type of things and keep them to myself but this film had something extra to it’s core, art. “In this Corner of the World” is a 2016 animated wartime drama, directed by Sunao Katabuchi. The story follows the life of a girl turned woman named Suzu, who lives during the time of WWII. It was co-released by Funimation Films in 2017 but it is not on the Funimation App. This film is based on the manga of the same name. There is an extended version of the film set to premiere December 20th, 2019, makes me think I should wait but I’ll update the blog when I see the new extended version. The blog this week may be a little short, I’m in bed with Pneumonia but I’m going to do my best to provide just as much rambling as the other before. 😅
